Needlework isn't just the realm of women, as a new exhibit of quilts at the Mission Houses Museum demonstrates By Burl Burlingame Star-Bulletin NOW that women can captain B-52s -- and can get cashiered out of the service for being as dumb as a man -- is it any surprise that men are sewing quilts? Some of the best of local man-made quilts go on display tomorrow at the Mission Houses Museum in a show called "Na Kapa Kuiki Hawai'i Na Ka Lima Kane (Hawaiian Quilts by Men's Hands)." Hawaiian quilting as a folk-art tradition began with the thrifty missionaries recycling scraps of cloth, and eventually became a way for women to express themselves artistically. Quilting can be done either as a solitary activity or with many hands helping simultaneously. Anselm Lum, 82, always liked doing needlepoint and needlework to keep his fingers busy, and enjoyed "art day" at Central Grammar School when the kids turned flour sacks into decorative hand towels using basic cross-stitching. He eventually became a carpenter and a school construction inspector. By Craig T. When wife Helen took a class in Hawaiian quilting in the 1970s, Lum picked up an unfinished project and finished it. Since then, he figures he's spent 13,000 hours quilting, usually while Helen worked in the evenings. "It's just therapy for me," he said. "I'm retired, so I only work mornings. I don't want to be a couch potato! And there's nothing on TV to watch anyways." Lum's designs are traditional -- "I'm not trying to influence anyone!" -- and he figures the only method he uses that's different is the old carpenter's dictum to measure twice, cut once. "I do a lot of measurements. Some quilters do it by eye. Not me. I plot mine out." Stan Yates, 51, a government expert on disabilities on Kauai, was "blown away" by the beauty and precise construction of Hawaiian quilts, and devoured every book he could find on the subject in the Lihue library. He began quilting in 1986, and by 1988 won a blue ribbon at the Kauai County Fair for a baby quilt design. He likes making quilts in which the positive and negative spaces are interlocked, like a Escher print, and in his spare time demonstrates quilting techniques at Kauai hotels. By Craig T. Younger quilters include Kimo Balai, 45, a lineman for the Hawaii Electric Light Company who lives in Kamuela, Hawaii, and Lincoln Okita, 46, a Honolulu probation officer. Balai's wife Sharon joined Ka Hui Kapa 'Apana O Waimea, a Big Island quilting group, in 1985, and Balai began paying dues so that he could partake in the refreshments brought by the women (the way to a man's hands is through his stomach?). A few years later, he became interested enough to learn, and since then has completed three quiltS. His first, called "Mai Poina 'Oe I'au (Don't You Forget Me)" was designed by Sharon to remind him that he is always on his busy wife's mind. Okita began quilting in 1981, also as a husband-wife activity, when he and wife Jo Malmstrom-Okita were living on a Sioux reservation in South Dakota, and they became determined to make a Sioux star-quilt together for their bed. Okita began Hawaiian quilting in 1990 after seeing Elizabeth Akana's TV show about Hawaiian quilting techniques. The precise stitching and obvious progress at the end of each session allows the quilter to get into a Zen zone of concentration, like a meditative state. "Quilting is my stress-reducer and provides me with a sense of concrete accomplishment that you usually don't get from social work," said Okita. By Craig T. Maui volcano has witnessed

East Maui volcano (Haleakala), Hawai`i [ TEXT ONLY ] Hualalai Lo`ihi East Maui, or Haleakala-- A Potentially Hazardous Volcano View east across Haleakala Crater, with young cinder cones in foreground. When asked about Hawaiian volcanoes, most people imagine the Island of Hawai`i and its eruptions at Kilauea or Mauna Loa volcanoes. But East Maui volcano has witnessed at least ten eruptions in thepast 1,000 years, and numerous eruptions have occurred there in the past 10,000 years. Thus, East Maui's long eruptive history and recent activity indicate that the volcano will erupt in the future. Haleakala National Park is the most visited part of East Maui. The Hawaiian name Hale-a-ka-la (lit., house of the sun), is now nearly synonymous with the entire shield of East Maui volcano. Early Hawaiians, however, applied the name only to the summit area, the site where the demigod Maui snared the sun and forced it to slow its journey across the sky. The oldest lava flow exposed on East Maui is about 1.1 million years in age. It is part of a sequence of flows emplaced near the end of shield building on East Maui. The time estimated to build a volcano from ocean floor to the end of its shield-building stage is thought by some scientists to be about 0.6 million years. East Maui volcano probably began its growth about 2.0 million years ago. Volcanism of the past 30,000 years on East Maui has been focused along the southwest and east rift zones. These two volcanic axes together form one gently curving arc that passes from La Perouse Bay (southwest flank of East Maui) through Haleakala Crater to Hana on the east flank. The alignment continues east beneath the ocean as Haleakala Ridge, one of the longest rift zones along the Hawaiian Islands volcanic chain. When lava enters the ocean, the intense heat produces a plume cloud with dangerous and potentially life threatening toxic gases, super heated steam, and hydrochloric acid. Eating at the Ono Then it’s time for ONO’s HAWAIIAN BBQ! Located in a ubiquitous two storey strip mall on the corner of Santa Monica and Bundy on the boundary between West LA and Santa Monica, this year old fast food is quickly becoming a magnet food outlet drawing both the multitude of students, professionals, and families who live nearby. My family drives from Pasadena (20 miles east) to get out BBQ from here. While chatting with some of the other patrons, I found a couple who drove from Long Beach (15 miles south) to get the food. Ono is Hawaiian for delicious. And that only starts to describe this wonderful food. This is a fast food restaurant, so the walk up counter and food ordering procedure is exactly the same as a KFC or Carl’s Jr. The menu is displayed on a neon lit board behind the cashier. The kitchen can be seen through the opening where the food passes. What’s to Eat? The food choices are simple: BBQ or rice bowls. But it is in the combination of the BBQ’s and rice dishes that this restaurant really amazes. The restaurant specializes in “plate lunches”. This is a classic Hawaiian meal made up of Asian and Island dishes, including Kalbi short ribs (Korean), Mahi Mahi (Hawaiian fish), BBQ Chicken (Chinese style), Chicken Katsu (deep fried breaded Japanese style chicken), accompanied by macaroni salad and steamed rice. The restaurant’s menu proclaims this to be “the de facto meal of choice in Hawaii and the best representation of the blend of cuisine and multi-cultures found in Hawaii. The meal takes a little while to get there because the meat is barbequed after you order, so everything is freshly cooked and not reheated in a microwave. But is it worth the wait! The Kalbi short ribs still had that smoky carmelization on the bones. At the time of this writing, this combination costs $6.69. And the portions are huge. The lunch plate fed me and my six year old and two year old, and had enough left over to share with my wife, who had ordered a more modest dish of Maui Pineapple Chicken. We’ve never made it to Hawaii, but if this is what they eat there every day, it’s no wonder that the Hawaiians dominate the Japanese Sumo championships. There are other dishes, including a curry chicken over rice, Salmon, Hamburgers, Caesar salad, Seafood Noodle Soup, the ever present Teriyaki Chicken bowl, and an appetizer intriguingly called Spam Musubi. Unfortunately, I couldn’t even con my one year old daughter into trying THAT one. “C’mon honey, it’s made with your favorite: pork!” She just turned away and started running for her mother. So I will have to update you on this one after I’ve starved myself enough to want to try it. The Restaurant and the Service The restaurant has a nice high ceiling, cafeteria seating, and is well lighted, and not that full. It is very clean. Most of the people sitting around were waiting for their take out. We took about 20 minutes to eat, but there must have been at least 20 take away orders during that same period. The Korean counter girls were nice enough and even substituted the rice for macaroni (for my kids), but they definitely looked over worked. They are one of the few Asian fast food places that take credit cards. And the county health inspection report is a proudly displayed “A”. What’s Not to Like Well, the parking can be difficult. The forecourt of the strip mall features only 10 minute surface parking and the narrowest and smallest basement parking ramp in LA. Not recommended if you are driving anything larger than a Chrysler Neon. It would also be nice if they had a few more of these around the city, perhaps with a drive through window. You know, for those of us who are too Hawaiian to get out of our cars.
