Such is the case with Hawaiian quilts. In the early 19th century, New England missionaries set out to Hawaii to spread the Christian word. In the process, they also taught the island natives the technique of quilting. The History of Hawaiian Quilts Hawaiian quilts have adapted over time and are now recognized by their subject matter. They typically reflect the stunning tropical flowers native to the islands or commemorate an event. Rather than using small, patchwork pieces, Hawaiian quilts are made with large pieces of brightly colored material, which are fastened onto a light-colored, solid background piece. The Hawaiian quilting tradition incorporates a fair amount of superstition and custom. For instance, it is considered impolite to sit on a Hawaiian quilt. The quilt is a reflection of the quilt maker and to sit on it implies disrespect. A quilt is always folded back or hung on a quilt rack before anyone sits upon or lies in a bed. There are many examples of Hawaiian quilts on the Internet. You can choose from a variety of block patterns or become inspired by the photos to create your own personal design. Traditionally, due to the warm climate, Hawaiian quilts are made of light and airy fabrics. If you live in a colder climate, consider creating a Hawaiian quilt as your summer covering. Sail, if there is wind, otherwise motor over to Lanai and spend the day snorkeling, eating, and taking a tour of the small town in center of the island. Crew were excellant and pupus and drinks were readily available on trip over and back. An excellant meal was served by the crew while on the island. Note: Skip the Molokini scene. There are much better snorkling sites without all the restrictions at Molokini Crater. To name a few: Black Rock at Kaanapali, Napili Bay, Honolua Bay. Sails out of Lahaina. Jul 7, 2005 : A TripAdvisor Member, Colorado Springs, CO What a great time my family and I had on our trip to Molokini with Trilogy. My husband and his extended family, 13 of us with an age range of 75 to 4, went on a morning snorkel trip. Some stayed on the boat, others snorkeled and some did a Scuba dive. All expressed the same pleasure in the experience. All you have to bring is yourself and a towel. They provided all gear; boogie boards for the children to support themselves while snorkeling, seasick medication or herbal remedies, great food and conversation. We enjoyed going out on a smaller boat with fewer participants and interacting with the crew. Food was great and the crew was fun and did a great job making us feel like we belonged on the boat with them. There is even a 10% discount if you book your excursion on line with them. In comparison, some of us did a snorkel trip to the Na Pali coast one week later on Kauai. Many people on the island recommended a particular company as the best so we went on an afternoon trip with them. Trilogy did so much better than “the best” on Kauai at providing a fun and welcoming environment. Don't miss an excursion with Trilogy while on Maui!! Jun 3, 2005 : A TripAdvisor Member, Laguna Hills, Ca. I decided to take my family, fiancee, daughter and parents to the morning trip to Lanai on the Trilogy. I had taken a trip there before a long time ago but not like this. The trip to the island was fantastic. The staff very attentive and the food was good. We saw spinner dolphins on our way to the island. Our captin has a good eye for spotting them! We spent several minutes circling them and watching them show off. Next we had a van tour of Lanai. Our tour guide was great! I only wish we could have spent more time there. The vans dropped us off at the beach for some fun in the sun. What a great beach and the snorkeling was the best. Very little tourists. We then went back to the marina where the staff cooked us a great BBQ lunch. After lunch we headed for home. The trip home seemed a little long as some people were getting sick. I was not one of those but did manage to twist my ankle getting on the boat. Not a big deal, but when I got home, I found I actually broke my foot! Lesson to be learned, when they say "watch your step", make sure you do it. My whole family loved the trip and I would do it again. The one thing I would add is that it would be nice if they served beer on the trip as the weather and scenery is perfect for an ice cold beer to top off the day! Keep up the good work guys! Crew was very friendly and well informed, food was excellent and plenty. There website is accurate when describing activities and food and schedule. Wish I had used Trilogy to go to Molokini! Apr 15, 2005 : A TripAdvisor Member, Strongsville, Ohio This was the best part of our trip to Maui!! This trip takes you to the island of Lana'i. We live in the east and have only experienced the atlantic ocean - the pacific ocean is sooooo much more blue and beautiful! On the boat ride - we were fortunate to see the humpback whales - fantastic!! We were able to get great pictures of Maui and Lana'i from the boat. On Lana'i, we had a van tour of the island which was very enjoyable. My husband did snorkeling - he said the snorkeling was the best on Lana'i - better than Maui or Kauai. He also was able to swim with spinner dolphins!! The beach was very beautiful and uncrowded. A picnic lunch on the boat and a delicious BBQ chicken dinner on the island of Lana'i was included. Also, sailing back to Maui, we had champagne! The crew on the boat were great! We had a fantastic time!! Well worth the money - $179 per person. The first full trailer truckload of Hawaiian Tropic product left the plant in 1974. That same year, during the oil crisis, huge tanks were installed at the plant to hold 120,000 gallons of oil. Jump to: Industry Firsts | General Information Ron Rice and the creation of Hawaiian Tropic Hawaiian Tropic: Industry Firsts Hawaiian Tropic pioneered the use and popularity of Aloe Vera Gel (lauded as nature's greatest healer) in cosmetics. Prior to automation, Hawaiian Tropic Distributors would wait at the plant with blank checks made out to Ron ready to take as much product as he could possibly produce. Hawaiian Tropic was the first U.S. suncare company to: promote rich, natural ingredients for moisturizing the skin. use tropical coconut/banana fragrance in lotions and oils. place higher than a 15 SPF in the U.S. mass market. Top Hawaiian Tropic: General Information Tanning Research Labs, Inc. manufactures Hawaiian Tropic products at its plant in Ormond Beach, Florida. Hawaiian Tropic will celebrate its 36th anniversary in 2005. Hawaiian Tropic holds a dominant position in U.S. and Canadian markets. We rank #1 on the Caribbean, Mexican and South American beaches. Hawaiian Tropic employs more than 2,000 people worldwide. The Ormond Beach headquarters facility for Hawaiian Tropic covers more than 306,500 square feet. Top Ron Rice and the creation of Hawaiian Tropic Ron Rice is the epitome of the 'American Dream'. Born in the mountains of North Carolina and raised in a log cabin, Ron became an entrepreneur at an early age. By five, he was running his own roadside stand at the foot of his family-owned mountain. He sold apples, grapes, nuts, honey, apple cider, and wreaths at Christmas to help the family. His father instilled in him the basic American values that he lives by today--honesty, fairplay, tough competition, and plenty of hard work. A firm believer in education, Ron graduated from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science Degree and set out on a career as a teacher. This enterprising young man would still be a chemistry teacher/football coach/part-time lifeguard today, if it had not been for a trip to Hawaii. While he was there, Ron saw women on the beach using natural oils to protect their skin. Having looked in vain all his life for a product that would shield his extremely fair skin from the sun, Ron was determined to create a product that would allow him and others to achieve a tan like the native Hawaiians. With $500.00 borrowed from his father, Ron set up business in his garage. He mixed coconut, avocado, kukui and other secret natural oils in a garbage can, bottled the formula and set out to sell it. "I had an old Ford Mustang convertible that the salt air had just eaten apart. I drove to pool decks and lifeguard stands and sold my original suntan product. I was obsessed," Rice says. The new product caught on immediately--no one had ever heard of a natural tanning formula before! When it came time to hire a staff and a sales force, Rice looked to his old teaching, lifeguard and football buddies. He sent this modified super sales team to various parts of the world and built Hawaiian Tropic into the second largest suncare company in the world, today grossing over $200 million a year. Ron shares his success with the love of his life, his daughter Sterling. When the two aren't traveling, they spend most of their time at their $5.5 million oceanfront estate in Daytona Beach--the city where Hawaiian Tropic originated. The palatial home took five years to build and sits just a few feet from where Ron's lifeguard tower once sat. In memory of his father, Ron had it built with North Carolina granite rock trucked down from the mountains to Florida. Ron continues to be the driving force behind the development, marketing, and promotion of new Hawaiian Tropic products. "Ron lives and breathes Hawaiian Tropic," says his director of advertising. "If he gets an idea at 4:00 a.m.--he will call you!" Rice also knows how to mix hard work with fun. He travels over 250 days a year to various celebrity/charity events, Grand Prix Races (where Hawaiian Tropic sponsors several cars), Miss Hawaiian Tropic International Pageants, The Cannes Film Festival, and many, many more places promoting Hawaiian Tropic . Amazingly, all the success and fame has not gone to Ron Rice's head. "My biggest peeve is people who become successful and forget their roots," he says. "The happiest day of my life was when I was able to pay my father back the $500.00 he loaned me and thank him for believing in me." The garbage can used to mix his first batch is now silverplated and stands in Ron's living room as a reminder of Hawaiian Tropic's early days, and Ron's tireless hard work and determination.
