Howard Dicus It's counterintuitive with the memory fresh of the only U.S.-flagged cruise line halting all Hawaii operations just a few weeks ago, but state officials have produced statistics that show cruise traffic has helped a lot this fall. Brought to you by Cingular The information can be found several pages into the month Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism report on visitor arrivals to the islands. It says 18,939 visitors arrived by air last month to take cruises that set sail from here. That represented a 24.3 percent increase over year 2000 levels. In October 2000, American Classic Voyages had just one cruise ship in local service, the Independence. A second one, the Patriot, began sailing by the end of the year, substantially increasing Hawaii cruise traffic. American Classic ran critically low on cash after Sept. 11 and filed for Chapter 11 last month, ceasing Hawaii cruises (on both of its vessels) Oct. 20. The numbers described above came in a quarter better than year 2000 even with no AMCV cruises at all during the last ten days of the month. "The Patriot and its sister ship the Independence have ceased their operations in Hawaii," the DBEDT report says. "However. their absence is to be filled by the 2,500-passenger vessel Norwegian Star, which is scheduled to commence interisland voyages in mid-December." Eight foreign-flagged cruise ships also made port calls in Hawaii last month bringing 12,563 passengers. That was one ship more, and almost 1,600 more visitors, than October 2000. There is one apples-and-oranges factor in the shift of cruise berths from American Classic Voyages to foreign-flagged carriers. Cruise lines generally keep port calls brief and encourage shopping on their ships. AMCV sought to distinguish itself with many Hawaii port calls, so that customers spent as much time on land as they did at sea, putting more money into island businesses. Foreign-flagged cruise ships also have a legal obligation to add at least one non-U.S. port of call to their Hawaii cruises. Some lengthy cruises set sail from Los Angeles but stop in Mexico before proceeding to Hawaii. The Norwegian Star is expected to make a side trip to another Pacific island. My name is Mike Crawford. I've been fishing in Maui waters since the late 60's -- professionally for over 25 years. I don't operate my own sportfishing charter business anymore. Instead I rely on my experience to personally direct Maui visitors to the fishing operator which best fits their needs. At Fish Maui.com you'll find thorough, honest information about the Maui sport fishing industry. When you arrive on Maui, you're gonna find yourself BOMBARDED by activities agents -- 90% of whom know abolutely NOTHING about fishing. Most are profit driven, and will do their damndest to book you on a charter boat which pays the highest commission, regardless of the quality of the trip. I run FishMaui.com because I REALLY LOVE fishing. If you email me, you WILL receive a personal response in return, typically within a few hours. No canned, impersonal messages, no hype.
